May 19, 2009 Major increase in Australia's marine protection one step closer

An important step toward securing the future of the globally significant but unprotected south west waters of Australia was taken today as the Commonwealth Government overnight revealed areas that will be further assessed for possible inclusion in a network of new marine protected areas.

February 23, 2009 Major new collaboration formed to secure future of WA's marine life

A new collaboration of key Australian and international conservation groups today launched Save Our Marine Life to secure the future of Australia's south west marine environment. This globally significant region is home to a far greater proportion of unique marine life than the Great Barrier Reef.

At the launch in Perth, a new report was also released. It found that up to 9 out of 10 marine species found off Australia's south west coast are found nowhere else on Earth, but less than 1% of this region is protected.

January 09, 2009 Pew Urges Western Australia to Do More on Marine Protection

Queensland, Australia - 01/09/2009 - State and federal government officials are being urged to increase marine protection off Western Australia's (WA) coast to meet a new global benchmark in ocean conservation that was set this week when U.S. President George W. Bush set aside more than 505,000 sq. kms of Pacific waters as marine reserves.

This is the largest area of the world's marine environment ever protected by any individual.

Queensland, Australia - 07/23/2007 - Two international conservation groups, the Pew Environment Group and The Nature Conservancy, have announced the creation of the Wild Australia Program, a $14 million, three-year effort to conserve Australia's bush, desert and oceans. The Wild Australia Program will be Pew's first major commitment to conservation work in Australia.
